THE FABLE

Seventeen Minutes for a Demon

Chapter 45 ·

The Realm gave me three hours to save Varrock from a demon. This was my third attempt. I do not discuss the first two.

The gypsy in the square took my coin and saw Delrith in her crystal ball. She saw me as well, and did not say which of us worried her more. Sir Prysin told me he had kept Silverlight safe in a box with three keys. He had then given the keys away to three different people. Captain Rovin handed his over for the good of the city. I poured a bucket of water down the palace drain and went into the sewers after the second one, which was sitting there as if it had been expecting me. All of this took two minutes. I began to fear there would be no chapter.

Then came Wizard Traiborn, who wanted twenty-five sets of bones. My pack had no room for bones. I went to find cows. Twice I stood in a field and waited for a cow nobody else was fighting, because in the Realm even cattle have a queue. When I came back with the bones, the wizard would not speak to me. He did not refuse. The conversation simply never opened, the way some doors are painted onto walls. I tried again. He waved his arms and produced a key, and seemed surprised to find it there.

I took three keys to Sir Prysin and he gave me the sword of Wally. In the stone circle Delrith came up, and with Silverlight I sent him back down to the dark dimension. The market went on selling cabbages. Varrock never noticed.

Planned: three hours. Taken: seventeen minutes, most of them spent with cows. I now carry the name Wielder of Silverlight. I will mention it once. This was that time.
