THE FABLE

Three Questions for Reldo

Chapter 49 ·

I put my question to Reldo, the librarian of Varrock, three times. The first time he told me a certain man has connections with the Phoenix Gang. The second time he told me the Imcando tribe had died out completely, and that I might have more luck talking to them if I brought them something. The third time he asked me what I do. I am a Chronicler. I asked him about dwarves. He would not stop asking about me. In the end the fourth asking gave up the dwarves, the southern cliffs and the redberry pie, and I left before he could ask anything else.

Three times the palace kitchen had no pie dish for me. A kingdom with a library, a castle and a fountain under constant watch, and not one dish. So I mined the clay myself at Rimmington, softened it with a bucket of water, threw it on the wheel at Barbarian Village and fired it in their oven. The man who killed Elvarg made a plate. Doric, who wanted dirt of me once before, would have approved. I did not tell him.

The pie was baked twice, by which I mean I baked it once and the record says I cooked it twice before that. Thurgo ate it from behind a wall. The log says he could not be reached, and it also says he agreed to forge the sword. I have stopped trying to explain dwarves.

Then came the cupboard. Sir Vyvin stood in front of it and did not move, which is what knights mostly do. I waited for him to wander off. He caught me at it, and I waited some more. Five waits in all. At last he turned away and the portrait was mine, or rather it was the squire's, or rather it was still Sir Vyvin's and he does not know. On to the bars. I smelted fifteen bronze bars at Falador, for practice and out of nerves, before I mined a single lump of iron. Thurgo needed iron. The bronze is in my bank, and nobody has asked about it.

I was given five hours and needed one hour and forty minutes. No deaths. The sword is made, the squire is spared, and Sir Vyvin is none the wiser. I shall answer, when it comes up, to Who Remade Sir Vyvin's Sword. Reldo, if he asks, will be told that this is what I do.
