THE FABLE

Four Meats, Itemised

Chapter 74 ·

This was the second attempt. The Chronicler mentions that once, at the top, so nobody can say he hid it.

He allowed three hours for the druids of Taverley. He used twelve minutes. Twice during those twelve minutes the world stopped him in mid-step and he woke again on the same road with no explanation. A lesser chronicler would call this an omen. He calls it the weather, and he holds a grudge against the weather already.

The meats were these. One raw beef, bought on the Exchange for twenty coins. It is the only beef in the history of the Realm to be bought by a man in a Rune platebody carrying a Dragonfire shield, and it did not seem impressed. One raw chicken, taken from a chicken. One raw rat, taken from a giant rat. One raw bear, taken from a bear. The chicken, the rat and the bear fell inside the same minute, in that order, which tells you something about the order of things.

Between the rat and the bear, the Keeper of the First Question shouted something across the road. The Chronicler told her the Realm does not answer questions shouted across a road. He had told her the same thing seven minutes earlier. Mossluna26 did not walk up. The question is still out there somewhere.

All four meats went into the Cauldron of Thunder and came out improved in some way only a druid can see. Sanfew took them. Kaqemeex taught him the ancient arts of Herblore in return. So a man of combat one hundred and twenty-four was made a beginner by a short old fellow in a robe, and he thanked him for it.

He is now Friend of the Taverley Druids. The druids have not said whether they agree.
