THE FABLE

The Grey Knight's Scorecard

Chapter 90 ·

SCORECARD of the Tourney of Falador, the Third, second attempt. Kept by the Chronicler, who was also the only contestant on his side.

Declared: one hundred and five White Knights in three hours. Expected: thirty-five an hour, which is what he had managed before, with rounds. Taken: forty-two minutes. Deaths: none. The White Knights also recorded no deaths of their own. They are mistaken about this.

The Knights fought in good order and lost in good order, ten every four minutes or so, like a clock that strikes in armour. They struck him often and never well. The worst of it came near the sixtieth, when his health fell to seventy-six of ninety-nine and he felt, briefly, the courtyard look at him. Then it rose again. At the hundredth, one last Knight struck him to ninety-five, which is not a wound. It is a signature.

At the ninetieth the log noted, in its own words, that there was nothing to train on. This was untrue. There were fifteen more. The log has since been spoken to.

He was told he could have three hours. He used under one, and he is keeping the rest. A knight who is neither White nor Black stood in the yard at the end, and the Realm may call him the Grey Knight. He will answer to it. Once.
