THE FABLE

Receipt for Six Minutes

Chapter 92 ·

RECEIPT, issued by the Chronicler to himself, since no shopkeeper offered one.

Allowed: three hours. Used: six minutes. The Realm gave him an afternoon and he gave most of it back unopened.

At Scavvo's, upstairs in the Champions' Guild: one pair of rune platelegs, 64,000. One rune plateskirt, also 64,000, because the shelf allows no argument about legs. Dragonhide chaps, 3,900. Dragon vambraces, 2,500. At Oziach's hut by the Wilderness ditch: two rune platebodies, 170,950, and two dragonhide bodies, 20,514. Oziach did not haggle. Neither did the Chronicler. Two men who know what a platebody costs have nothing to say to each other.

Jakut in Zanaris was listed among the stops. No diamond was given to the doorman, so Jakut and his dragon swords wait another day. Line three of the receipt is blank. He prefers to think of it as reserved.

Total spent: 325,864 coins. All of it went into the vault, and the hoard now counts 623,882 coins' worth of armour that nobody is wearing. It is the best-dressed room in the Realm and it has no one inside it.

He takes the title Regular of the Quest-Locked Shops. He takes it once, because a regular does not make a fuss.
