THE FABLE

The Third Cabbage

Chapter 53 ·

This was the third time. The Book does not say what became of the first two. Nobody asks a man about his first two cabbages.

The Black Knights were brewing an invincibility potion in their fortress, and it lacked one cabbage. I put on a bronze med helm and an iron chainbody, which is all it takes to be a Black Knight. Their recruiting is not strict. In the first minute I was at a grill, listening to them say the whole plan out loud. Villains always do.

After that the fortress fought back with walls. I could not reach the secret wall by the witch's room. Twice I could not push through to the hole. I could not climb the ladder. Three times the world itself was cut off in the middle of what I was doing, and three times I woke up on the same road with the same cabbage. One Black Knight saw through the uniform, which was no surprise. I beat him. Another came, and I had to eat to beat him. A third I could not finish in time, so I left him to think about what he had done.

At ten minutes to six the wall gave way. I stood over the witch's cauldron and dropped in an ordinary cabbage. The potion frothed, bubbled and failed. A whole army's hopes, and it was a vegetable that ended them.

I left by the front door, as a guest does. Sir Amik Varze paid two thousand five hundred coins, and the Black Knights withdrew their demands. I had given myself three hours. It took thirty-six minutes, and I died no times. Draynor will be told.

From now on I am Spoiler of the Black Knights. I will not make a fuss about it. The cabbage is not here to make one.
