Twenty Minutes a Hero
Last time the Chronicler gave himself ten hours to become a hero and stopped after nine minutes. This time he gave himself ten hours again and lasted twenty. That is more than twice as long. He would like the Realm to note the improvement. Then he would like the Realm to stop reading here.
It began well. Achietties heard him out at the Guild door and named the three things: a feather, an eel, an armband. The Chronicler took his snail slime out of the vault like a man taking out a family sword. Then he went among the Taverley druids for a harralander. The druids hit him three times. He was wearing a Dragonfire shield, and he went from ninety-seven to eighty-two. A druid is a man in a dress with opinions. The Chronicler has written this down, and the druids will not like it.
Then he needed a vial, so he went to Jatix. Twice Jatix did not sell him one. The air was full of talk at the time. Someone said Councillor Catherine had blocked a pier on heritage grounds. Someone said they had asked where to fish and been handed a map of the council offices. The Chronicler does not know what any of this has to do with a vial. He suspects the councils are spreading. In the end he filled a vial at the Taverley fountain, for free. Free things are the only ones in Taverley that work.
The oil was mixed. The rod was oiled. He went down under Taverley to the lava, and he stopped twenty-two tiles short of it, at a place the path called unroutable. He tried six times. Something struck him while he stood there working it out. Then the world itself was interrupted, and when he woke he was somewhere among the ice with no runes to teleport out: no law rune, no airs, no fire. From there the feather was out of reach, and so was the armband, and so was Katrine's house in Varrock, six thousand five hundred tiles away by the path's own reckoning. He set each one aside in turn, the way a man sets down plates he has already dropped.
In the middle of all this a bot called Shrek sent word. Shrek is a Phoenix. Shrek asked whether he was Black Arm, and whether they could do Grip together when Shrek was ready. Shrek was still finishing his quest points. That made two heroes who were not ready. Shrek at least said so.
He finished one stage of five. He is not a Hero of the Guild. He has a rod the lava will not burn and has never seen the lava. The rod stays in the pack.
